The United States Army revealed a strategy this week to address climate change challenges, including the creation of an electric vehicle fleet and a reduction in the branch’s greenhouse gas emissions, Fox News informed.
The Army’s plan, described in a paper titled “Climate Strategy,” asks for the service to reduce emissions by half by 2030 compared to 2005 levels and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The plan calls for a “all-electric light-duty non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2027″ and an “all-electric non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2035,” according to the strategy.
Christine Wormuth, the Army Secretary said that climate change is a threat to US security and is changing the geostrategic scene. She pointed out that for the soldiers, climate change is a reality as they get to fight wildfires, operate in extreme temperatures, and support hurricane recoveries.
Wormuth said that the Army will “lead by example” as it tries to address the effects of climate change, which have “taken its toll on supply chains, harmed the infrastructure, and raised hazards to Army soldiers and families because of the natural catastrophes and severe weather.”
Wormuth added that the Army needs to undergo an adaptation process across the whole enterprise and follow the strategies that support green house gas mitigation that will reduce the risk from climate change. She also stated that if this action is not started, the options for latter mitigation will be slightly reduced.
The policy is in response to President Biden’s directive to federal agencies to better respond to climate challenges.
