In Idaho, Wyoming, Mississippi, West Virginia, North Dakota, Louisiana and Tennessee, less than 50 percent of the population has received their first dose of the vaccine. These seven states make up the lowest Covid vaccination rates in the U.S., and are being hit the hardest by the highly contagious Delta variant.
Geographically, the states with lower vaccination rates mostly fall in the South, or are in the Midwest or Mountain West regions.
In these states with lower vaccination rates, the hospitalization and death rates are also much higher. Hospitalization is nearly four times higher and death rates are more than 5.5 times higher than in the states with the highest vaccination rates. This means that if you live in a state with a lower vaccination rate, you are much more likely to be hospitalized or die of the illness.
Looking at the U.S. overall, exactly half of all states have a fully vaccinated population of at least 50 percent.
The more transmissible Delta variant has meant that cases in the U.S. have been on the rise since early July. With schools reopening across America, health experts warn that there may be a rise in cases among children soon as well as adults.
