The largest socialist organization in the United States, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), blamed on Saturday the US and NATO for setting the stage for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, sparking condemnation from other Democrats.
With chapters in all 50 states and over 92,000 members, including high-profile Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders, DSA is the largest socialist organization in the US.
Although it has previously endorsed Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and John Kerry, DSA has notably chosen not to endorse current President Joe Biden.
DSA’s statement blamed the US and NATO’s actions and their imperialist expansionism for having helped to spark the Russian invasion of Ukraine, reaffirming its call for the US to withdraw from NATO.
DSA has blamed the ruling class for trying to build a new world – through a dystopic transition grounded in militarism, imperialism, and war – and stressed that the Socialists’ duty is to build an alternative, declaring “no war but class war” to end the statement.
Calling for immediate diplomacy actions and de-escalation to resolve the crisis and condemning the invasion of Russia in Ukraine, DSA warned that this war will inflict the worst wounds on working classes.
The other Democrats from different wings of the party have immediately condemned the DSA’s position and sought the organization to reaffirm its commitment to the current alliances of Washington.
Deeply concerned by DSA’s statement, a military veteran and current congressional candidate Max Rose stressed it’s time to double down on America’s alliances and punish Russia with unprecedented and crippling sanctions.
Describing DSA’s remarks as shameful, the White House Rapid Response Director, Mike Gwin, swiftly called on the group to re-evaluate why it referred to the deaths of dozens of Ukrainians seeking democracy and basic freedoms in 2014 as a ‘coup’.
