Hamas Alarmed After Israeli Threats to Resume Targeted Assassinations

Egyptian security officials currently visiting the Gaza Strip have allegedly warned Hamas that Israel will resume targeted assassinations in the Gaza Strip and abroad in response to the recent spate of terror attacks in the West Bank.

The Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Akhbar newspaper have published the warning on Monday, but Hamas officials were not immediately available for comment on the report

Egypt has sent two delegations of intelligence officers and civil engineers in Gaza Strip for talks with Hamas officials aimed at preserving the ceasefire with Israel and advancing plans to rebuild the enclave in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas war seven months ago.

Cairo has pledged $500 million as post-war reconstruction efforts’ assistance in the Gaza Strip.

Four senior officers from Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, entered the Gaza Strip through the Erez border crossing with Israel while the civilian delegation consisting of engineers and journalists has used the Rafah border crossing to get into the Gaza Strip.

Hamas-affiliated political analyst Mustafa al-Sawwaf stressed that the Egyptians brought noting new during their visit to the Gaza Strip where they only inspected the so-called Egyptian projects – probably the sole purpose of the visit – which are not among the security delegation’s tasks.

The entire Palestinian file, on the other hand, is within the jurisdiction of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, but no time has been dedicated to it.

Hamas has also expressed its displeasure at Cairo’s failure to fulfill its promises to ease travel restrictions imposed on the Palestinians living there.

The Egyptian delegations’ visit came in time when both Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad warned that Israel’s behavior in the West Bank and Jerusalem would lead to further escalation and stressed they’re running out of patience for the Israeli “foot-dragging” in lifting of the blockade.
