Washington has imposed sanctions on Chinese tech companies, the Treasury Department said.
“The list of Chinese companies in the military-industrial complex has been updated. Organizations have been added to the Foreign Assets Control Department list,” the US Finance Ministry said on its websites.
The list of Chinese companies includes Cloudwalk Technology, based in Guangzhou, six organizations from several other provinces, and Yitu Ltd, registered in the Cayman Islands.
The Treasury Department explained that the eight Chinese technology companies “actively support biometric surveillance and surveillance of ethnic and religious minorities in China, especially the Muslim Uyghur minority in Xinjiang.”
The department also said that the decision wanted to show the connection of private defense sector firms and surveillance with the government “to oppress members of ethnic and religious minorities.”
