Controversial Equity in Math Program Under Fire from California GOP Lawmakers

Republican lawmakers from California are calling on the Board of Education to dismiss a controversial “equity in math” curriculum that is currently considered, Fox News informed.

Kevin McCarthy, the House GOP Leader and Representative Young Kim head a delegation of 11 people that penned a letter to Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond, the Board’s president, on Friday, to voice their concern about the proposed program set to be implemented in the public schools in California to discontinue the practice for certain students to enter advanced level math classes and seek the students to study at the same level until high school’s junior year.

In the letter, first reviewed by Fox News, the GOP lawmakers said that implementing a model like this would curb creativity, free-thinking, and innovation.

Those who stand behind this new program claim that it will cope with the systemic racism in math and advance the achievement over time, by placing the students on an even level, specifically the Latino and Black students with low-income.
