Attorney General James Supports Legislation to Limit Police Use of Force

Letitia James, the New York Attorney General gave her support for the Democrat-sponsored legislation aimed at limiting the Police’s use of force, Fox News informed.

According to the bill, cops might legally use force as an absolute last resort only.

The current law allows for a simple necessity to justify police’s use of force. The “simple necessity” norm sets a very high standard in order to prosecute police officers if they had used excessive force, a press release from the James office stated.

The new bill titled Police Accountability Project would require police officers to first exhaust every option that covers verbal warnings, deescalation etc., and only after using every other non-violent option, they can resort to force. The new bill would initiate penalties for the law enforcement officers who would use force before exhausting all other options.

Certain police union leaders immediately reacted on the proposed legislation. The City of New York’s Police Benevolent Association President said that the new bill is not very comprehensive and would put officer in a rather impossible situations where they could not certainly determine if they could use force.
