US agencies investigators are still struggling to determine who or what is behind the strange incidents involving two White House officials were struck by a mysterious illness late last year, one the day after the presidential election and one several weeks later, CNN reports.
The first official suffered only mild symptoms, including headaches and sleeplessness, which went away after a week while the second official, whose case has not been previously reported, suffered more serious symptoms and sought immediate medical treatment.
In both cases the concerned officials went through the same sensory experiences, nervous system symptoms and physical symptoms that have sickened more than 100 US diplomats, spies and troops around the globe and have come to be known as “Havana Syndrome.”
The intelligence services still aren’t sure who or what is causing the incidents or if they can be called attacks for sure.
Investigators have struggled for more than five years now to explain the strange ordeals reported by US diplomats and other government workers in Cuba, Russia, China and including sudden vertigo, headaches and head pressure – episodes that in some cases have led to chronic headaches and brain injuries.
According to a statement from the Senate Intelligence Committee on the matter, the number of suspected cases worldwide is increasing with more than 130 cases over the past five years. New York Times reported at least one episode overseas in the last two weeks.
Biden administration dramatically increased its efforts to identify the cause of these incidents pressured by the victims and lawmakers and, who say the intelligence community has failed to provide Congress with enough information on what it knows and how it’s responding.
Congress has also emphasize the failed efforts of the agencies- including the Pentagon, intelligence community and State Department- to coordinate efforts and address the problem.
Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said she’s appalled that many of these individuals who were injured in the line of duty have had to fight to get adequate medical care, to have their injuries even recognized and acknowledge and to receive financial compensation.
National Academy of Sciences report in March found that directed, pulsed radiofrequency energy was the most likely cause of the strange symptoms but some academics have publicly dismissed the theory.
A source familiar with the intelligence on the matter said that the whole ‘microwave’ theory is not because someone has any intelligence to suggest it, or someone saw it happen, but purely on symptoms.
Same source noted they don’t have any hard leads but only circumstantial evidence that could also be something completely different. Even now, officials who report these symptoms are closely screened to confirm if their symptoms are physical or psychosomatic.
