President Donald Trump’s lawyer Jay Sekulow is pushing back against a Washington Post report saying Trump’s legal team is “discussing the president’s authority to grant pardons.”
Sekulow told CBS News that pardons pertaining to the ongoing federal probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian election meddling “are not being discussed and are not on the table.”
His comments come after the Post reported the president’s legal team was mulling the president’s authority to grant pardons, and that Trump himself had questioned advisers about his ability to pardon himself, family members and aides in the wake of the Russian investigation.
The report comes amid a shakeup on Trump’s legal team, which saw the resignation of the team’s spokesman, and a new leader. Marc Kasowitz stepped down from taking the lead in managing the team’s response to the Russia probe, and will be replaced by Ty Cobb.
The team will now be forced to respond to a slew of reports regarding the ongoing probe. The Washington Post reported on Thursday the legal team is looking at way to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the probe into Russian election meddling.
Bloomberg reported on Thursday Mueller was digging into the president’s past business transactions, despite Trump’s warning not to do so in a New York Times interview.
