Former CIA Director Says GOP Leaders Should Put Law Above Trump When Mueller Probe Ends

The former director of the CIA on Tuesday stated that GOP members would have to come forward after special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation ends in order to put the country and the law “above any one person,” President Donald Trump included.

“When the Special Counsel’s work is done, the Republican Party must have its modern-day equivalents of Watergate heroes—Howard Baker, Elliot Richardson, Bill Ruckelshaus, John Dean—who will put country, fellow citizens, & the law above any one person, including @realDonaldTrump,” John Brennan tweeted.

Mueller’s team is investigating Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election, as well as possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that Mueller in the coming months will focus on the allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

A person familiar with the investigation told Bloomberg that Mueller’s team is looking to wrap up the portion of the probe focused on collusion by the fall, and hand down any possible collusion-related charges in that time frame.

The special counsel’s office declined to comment to Bloomberg.

At least 13 people tied to Trump have been revealed over the course of the probe to have been in contact with Russians, according to the outlet. Former Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone was the latest to reveal that a Russian man offered damaging information on Hillary Clinton in exchange for $2 million.

Stone claims that the man was acting as an FBI informant. The man, Henry Greenberg, confirmed the meeting but denied that he was working for the FBI, and records do not indicate that he was working in that role.

President Trump denies any collusion and regularly calls the probe a “witch hunt.”

Brennan, who served as CIA director throughout former President Barack Obama’s second term in office, has been highly critical of Trump, particularly over his attacks on the U.S. intelligence community and Mueller’s investigation.
