Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s lawyer, dismissed the reports that Michael Cohen, Trump’s longtime personal lawyer and fixer, is going to cooperate with investigators in the special counsel’s Russia probe.
During an interview with Fox News‘s Laura Ingraham late Wednesday, Giuliani also denied the reports that Cohen has incriminating information on Trump.
“He’s not cooperating nor do we care because the President did nothing wrong,” Giuliani said. “I am absolutely certain of that. Michael Cohen, I think, would tell you he’s got nothing incriminating with the President,” he also said, adding that he would be “very comfortable” if Cohen began cooperating with prosecutors.
Giuliani added that he empathized with Cohen and said he didn’t believe Cohen was “going to tell a falsehood. I think he’s going to tell the truth, and we are very comfortable with that.
The former New York City mayor also said that Mueller’s team filed perjury and attempted witness tampering charges against Paul Manafort because the original charges of tax fraud and money laundering against him were “going under.”
“Look at Manafort,” Giuliani said, connecting Cohen’s case to Manafort’s. “Manafort was probably totally innocent in talking to these people, he wanted to find out what was going on with his case. And they’ve turned it into another charge against him.”
The special counsel stated in a court filing last week that Manafort tried to tamper with federal witnesses in his case saying that is an effort to “suborn perjury.” Manafort pleaded not guilty to the charges against him regarding his past lobbying work in Ukraine, saying that the new charges would not affect his defense.
“Mr. Manafort is innocent and nothing about this latest allegation changes our defense. We will do our talking in court,” his attorneys said.
