President Donald Trump on Monday surprised everyone when he confirmed that he and his closest advisors have made several mistakes in assembling his Cabinet, which in recent times has already seen three departures.
The Hill reported that Trump made the rare admission while praising Labor Secretary Alex Acosta and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin during a tax event in Miami.
“Not all of my choices were good, but they were great ones,” the president said.
However, Trump did not single out any Cabinet officials for criticism. Since President Trump took office a dozen of his Cabinet picks have faced accusations of ethical misconduct or had a confrontation with the president for personal and political reasons.
Since the beginning of this year, President Trump has fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, after months of disagreements on international policies. Trump also fired Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, who has faced criticism over taxpayer-funded travel for him and his wife. Trump also fought on several occasions with other officials over health-care issues.
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson are also under heavy scrutiny for spending taxpayer dollars on office decorations, as well as other actions.
Last year, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price was also forced to resign his position after a report revealed that he frequently used a private government jet to travel on government business.
Trump’s first choice to lead the Department of Labor, Andrew Puzder, withdrew his nomination after another report showed that he employed a housekeeper who was living illegally in the U.S.
During his time in office, Trump has faced regular criticism from experts who say that the president did not manage to properly vet his choices for key administration positions.
Meanwhile, this week, three of the administration national security aides had to resign amid controversy surrounding Trump’s new chief national security advisor John Bolton.
