President Donald Trump is set to meet with top GOP senators Thursday to discuss a potential fix to the DACA program which was repealed by the administration earlier this year. Half a dozen top Republicans who are interested in attaining a legislative measure on DACA beneficiaries are expected to attend the meeting at the White House, including Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley.
Several weeks ago, Trump announced that he would put an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program by March 2018. Senate Republicans are also interested in offering several proposals which would be paired with legislation that could allow Dreamers legal status in the country.
“The purpose of the meeting is for us to hear from the president his views of some of the thoughts that we have. I can’t say there’s much progress being made because we’ve got to sit down with the Democrats. There’s no way a partisan bill is going to pass,” Grassley said on Tuesday.
Earlier in October, Trump said that in order for the DACA problem to be solved the administration has “to get something in return.” He added that what he was asking for was stricter border regulation, a wall on the border with Mexico, as well as “other things.” Trump didn’t say whether he believes a solution to the problem could be worked out, but that it remains to be seen what the outcome will be. However, he reassured DACA recipients that there was no reason to fear deportation in the course of the six months before the program gets terminated.
GOP senators have been trying to come up with a DACA deal which would get the support of both conservatives and Democrats who are calling on lawmakers to find a solution to the Dreamer issue by the beginning of next year, Politico reports.
