The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Brock Long, said that the complaints coming from the San Juan mayor regarding relief efforts are just “political noise” and that they have “filtered them out.” He also said they were responding to the crisis in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria several weeks ago.
Since then, the mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz has called multiple times to the U.S. Government to take action in helping the people of the island. Last Sunday, she tweeted: “Increasingly painful to understand the American people want to help and U.S. Gov does not want to help. WE NEED WATER!” and later criticized FEMA for failing to provide help in due time.
In response, FEMA administrator said they have long ago filtered out her “political noise” so that they can continue to “to make progress and push forward restoring essential functions for Puerto Rico.” According to Long, 85 percent of the agency is currently deployed, working on major issues. President Donald Trump also attacked Cruz through Twitter, claiming she had poor leadership skills, due to which she couldn’t get workers in Puerto Rico to help.
Long added that rebuilding the island “is going to be a greater conversation for the Congress in conjunction with the governor.”
