After initially supporting a federal ban on abortion after the first three months of pregnancy, Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reversed himself on Sunday with his campaign pointing out that he allegedly misunderstood the question.
Answering NBC reporter Ali Vitali’s string of abortion questions at the Iowa State Fair, Kennedy said he believes that the decision to abort a child should be up to the woman during the first three months of life and that, if he were elected president, he’d sign a federal ban on abortion after 15 weeks or 21 weeks of pregnancy.
But, subsequently, his campaign claimed Kennedy did not mean to support any federal limits on abortion, arguing that he misunderstood a question, and stressing that his position on abortion is that it’s always the woman’s right to choose and that he does not support legislation banning abortion.
