Florida Governor and GOP presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis threatened on Sunday to escalate the US trade war with China if elected president in 2024 even though he trails way behind former president Trump, who instigated the ongoing trade war with Beijing.
Although he was unclear on how to achieve that, DeSantis said that he would revoke the normal trade status between Washington and Beijing, noting that he’d even take executive action as appropriate to be able to move the US in that direction though he’ll probably need the Congress.
Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration has only deepened the trade war with Beijing started by Trump, tacitly supporting breakaway island Taiwan’s claim to independence and banning the microchip technologies’ export to China despite promising a fresh start in foreign relations in 2021 when he entered the White House.
Calling Chinese President Xi Jinping a “dictator”, he even undid limited diplomatic progress made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his recent visit to Beijing.
