Senator of the United States Mitt Romney said that Republican Representative George Santos, who is in hot water over his membership in Congress, shouldn’t have attended President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech.
Before Biden’s speech, Santos, notorious for forging his resume, was seen having a brief conversation with Romney, a party senior statesman, and previous Republican presidential contender.
According to CNN, an official witnessed the “tense exchange,” claiming that Romney told Santos “You don’t belong here.”
“He shouldn’t be in Congress and they’re going to go through the process and hopefully get him out,” Mitt Romney said after Biden’s State of the Union speech. “But he shouldn’t be there and if he had any shame at all he wouldn’t be there.”
Santos, according to Romney, was informed of this.
Biden, members of this Cabinet, justices of the Supreme Court, and senators all enter the chamber through the middle aisle, where Santos had seated himself.
Santos is the subject of ethical complaints from other members of Congress, but a spokesperson for Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier on Tuesday stated that because the House Ethics Committee has not yet convened for the upcoming two years, it is unable to conduct any prospective investigations.
Santos has expressed regret for “embellishing” his credentials, but he has rejected requests from residents and other New York state Republicans for him to quit. He has said that he will only step down from his position if he loses the next election in 2024.
