President Joe Biden will deliver his annual State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday night, Associated Press reported.
Biden is ready to offer a reassuring assessment of the nation’s condition rather than roll out flashy policy proposals as he delivers his second State of the Union address seeking to overcome pessimism in the country and concerns about his own leadership.
The president is expected to highlight the policy and legislative successes of his administration’s first two years and to make an implicit campaign pitch as he plans another run for the White House in 2024.
His speech before a politically divided Congress comes as the U.S. struggles to make sense of major issues at home and abroad, including economic uncertainty, along Russian war in Ukraine, and growing tensions with China.
The president is also expected to tout the recent positive economic news, following stronger-than-expected job growth in January, as well as moderating inflation.
Biden had success during the 2022 midterm elections. Democrats actually picked up a seat in the Senate and staved off an anticipated red wave in the House of Representatives.
Many pundits and observers pointed to Biden’s defense of democracy and pointed criticism of the Trump-era GOP as reasons for that success, The Guardian reports.
But polls continue to show the U.S. is less than excited about the prospect of another term for the incumbent.
Yet Biden appears to be gearing up for a reelection campaign that could once again pit him against the man he defeated in the 2020 election, former president Donald Trump.
Many people are tired with the idea that the 2024 election could be the same match-up as the 2020 election: Biden vs. Trump.
Biden confidantes are hopeful that the vast audiences who typically tune in to the State of the Union — 38 million people across 16 networks last year — will be swayed by how he lays out his record over the last two years and begins to open his case for four more.
