Democrats are highlighting New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s shrinking margin of victory over Republican opponent Lee Zeldin as a positive development that could inspire more Democrats to vote on Election Day, Fox News reports.
Hochul had a 17-point advantage over Zeldin in polls taken in August, but that margin has since reduced to just 4, according to some pollsters. In a heavily Democratic state where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by about a two to one margin, the tight race is concerning for Democrats. According to Politico, Democrats claim the survey would act as a “wake-up call” for their supporters.
The state’s gubernatorial contest has seen heavy financial investment from both the Republican and Democratic parties. Republicans, who haven’t controlled the office since 2002, would consider winning the election to be their greatest triumph.
The Democratic Governors Association announced last week that it is “taking nothing for granted, and won’t sit quietly by” as it launched a new super PAC to support Hochul’s efforts.
Although Zelding has slightly outspent Hochul in the last weeks of the campaign, Hochul has maintained her lead in fundraising throughout the race. Politico reports that Zeldin and allied organizations have spent $9.3 million on advertising since October 18 as opposed to Hochul’s $9 million.
In particular, Zeldin has focused his campaign on fixing the economy and the rise in crime in New York City. This past weekend, he sharpened the issue by tweeting the cover of the most recent New York Post. The homeless man, who has been arrested 25 times before and is now accused of raping a jogger last week, was shown in the magazine.
For supporting cashless bail, which police claim puts officers in risk by sending dangerous offenders back onto the streets, Hochul has been under fire from all sides.
