Governors to Hold Virtual Meeting with Biden to Protect Women’s Reproductive Health

A group of governors whose states have “acted rapidly” to “defend women’s reproductive health” in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will virtually meet with President Biden on Friday, Fox News informed.

Just one week after the Supreme Court announced its decision to return the decision on abortion to the states after almost 50 years, a White House official said the president is hosting an event on Friday afternoon to speak with the governors in a virtual meeting.

President Biden will attend from the White House and speak with the governors of the states that have acted quickly to preserve women’s reproductive health in the wake of the Dobbs ruling, the White House official said.

Governors Ned Lamont of Connecticut, Kathy Hochul of New York, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, and Bruce Rauner of Illinois

Governors J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Gavin Newsom of California, Kate Brown of Oregon, and Jay Inslee of Washington are anticipated to attend the event.

Lamont passed a measure that is a first for the US that safeguards doctors and patients traveling from other states with anti-abortion laws to Connecticut to receive abortion services.

Additionally, by extending the types of medical professionals who are qualified to provide specific abortion-related care, that bill increases access to abortion in Connecticut.

In New York, a state where Medicaid pays for abortions, Hochul earlier this month signed a package to further maintain, protect, and strengthen patients’ and providers’ access to an abortion.

Lujan Grisham issued an executive order in New Mexico to shield healthcare professionals from efforts at legal retaliation.

In addition to making it clear that it will not comply with the extradition efforts from the states where criminal charges are now being sought against the person for getting or performing reproductive services, the order safeguards medical professionals from “discipline because of an out-of-state resident getting abortion services in the state.”
