Abortion Rights Activists Express Anger with Biden over Roe v Wade

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee approved one of the nation's strictest abortion laws in July of last year, prohibiting abortion once a fetal heartbeat is found at about six weeks, which is typically before a woman learns she is pregnant.

Anger with President Joe Biden and his Democratic Party over their apparent lack of direction on abortion rights is likely to drive months of planned rallies around the country, organizers say, Reuters reports.

An extraordinary Supreme Court leak two weeks ago revealed that the conservative majority of justices may soon repeal the famous Roe v. Wade decision that established abortion rights in 1973. Protesters marched throughout the US on Saturday, the first day of what organizers called a “summer of rage.”

According to opponents, the Biden administration and Democrats have not presented a viable plan for dealing with such a ruling since the Supreme Court leak. They asked Biden to be more involved and outspoken in a national response to the possible verdict.

Some advocates say, Biden, who has stated that he personally opposes abortion but respects a woman’s freedom to choose, has been a hesitant ally on the issue since he rarely speaks publicly about it.

Frustration is exacerbated by the perception that Democrats would have plenty of preparation time. Conservatives have been clear about their desire for a blanket ban on abortion for years, and women’s rights organizations have been warning about the repercussions of a conservative majority on the Supreme Court for years.

American women have switched to the Democratic Party in the past few decades. According to Pew Research, 56 percent of registered female voters identified as Democrats or Democratic-leaning in 2018 and 2019, up from 48 percent in 1994.

According to a study conducted by Reuters and Ipsos last year, the topic that would enrage Democratic women the most if the government acted against their beliefs was abortion rights. Abortions should be lawful in some or all instances, according to about 60% of Americans.

Critics, including some elected leaders, say the possibility of the Supreme Court reducing abortion access despite public opposition and the significance of the issue to women voters demonstrates how ineffectual Democrats are.
