Tulsi Gabbard, a former congresswoman from Hawaii, said that Barack Obama is behind the initiative to form a Disinformation Governance Board, which she equated with George Orwell’s famous “Ministry of Truth,” Fox News informed.
Gabbard took to Twitter on Sunday saying that President Joe Biden is just the front man referencing to a statement of Barack Obama who says that the social media censors are not efficient enough, and that the government needs to step in an deal with this issue.
Gabbard, a Democrat, was referring to Obama’s recent speech at Stanford University, in which he claimed that tech corporations struggle to moderate content on their own and asked for additional regulation.
Obama also mentioned that it is clear that more and more companies are acknowledging some responsibility about certain content shared on their platforms, and are constantly investing in methods to better monitor it, adding that this is still a tough thing to do given that fact that there is a lot of content out there.
Obama said he believes the companies’ employees are “sincere” in their efforts to regulate violent content and hateful speech, but that more has to be done to assist them in doing so.
Obama argued that the moderation of the content can reduce the malicious content, this method is still not enough.
Obama’s remarks follow the creation of a Disinformation Governance Board by the Biden administration, which will be overseen by the Department of Homeland Security with the objective of combatting internet disinformation.
Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security spoke before the House Appropriations Subcommittee claiming that the ultimate goal is to use the DHS resources so that the threat of misinformation spreading is addressed.
Mayorkas also stated that the board would be highly focused on minimizing the spread of disinformation in the run-up to the 2022 midterm elections, but the critics have expressed concerns about the board’s consequences for free expression.
