British Plan to Send Asylum Seekers to Rwanda Sparks Fierce Criticism

British Home Secretary Priti Patel has unveiled another extremely controversial plan. Patel plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

The plan immediately was condemned across the board by politicians, charities, human rights groups, advocates, and activists as ill-conceived, inhumane, and just plain evil.

The British government is expected to announce today a multi-million-pound plan for asylum seekers who cross the Channel in small boats to be flown to Rwanda for processing.

The Scottish National party’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford said that the plan was “absolutely chilling”. He said that to think about vulnerable people coming to the UK for a whole host of reasons to then be taken all the way to Africa to be processed was chilling.

This is not the mark of a civilized society, Blackford said and said it was evil.

A Conservative MP, Andrew Mitchell — therefore from the same political party as Patel — said the new approach was “globally unprecedented,” and said MPs from across the house of parliament have already expressed extreme concerns.

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford said the plans were cruel and inhumane.

Drakeford also pointed out that the plans were a cynical distraction from Prime Minister Boris Johnson breaking the law. Johnson was slapped with fines for breaking his own laws during Covid lockdowns, making him the first sitting prime minister to ever break their own laws.

Refugee and human rights organizations have vehemently criticized the plans and warned that they were unlikely to address the exploitation of vulnerable people, and will just exploit the most vulnerable even more.

Chief Executive of the Refugee Council Never Solomon said the British government is violating the principle of the UN convention, which the UK was a founding signatory for. It specifically says Britain needs to “grant people a fair hearing on UK soil.”

Patel is frequently under fire for extremely controversial policies around refugees and asylum seekers.
