House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., refused to call for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ resignation, but said that his wife’s recently released text messages about attempts to keep former US President Donald Trump in office demonstrate the need for a “code of ethics” for the nation’s highest court, Fox News informed.
After it was revealed that Thomas’ wife Virginia (Ginni) Thomas sent some text messages to Mark Meadows the then-White House chief of staff asking him to contest Trump’s 2020 election loss, a few Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Representative from New York, have urged Thomas to submit his resignation or be impeached because he has not recused himself from the cases related to the Capitol insurgence on January 6, 2021.
When asked if Thomas should submit his resignation at her weekly press conference on Thursday, Pelosi said she wouldn’t say that, but added, that she does not think he should have been appointed to his post.
Democrats want Thomas to recuse himself from all of the cases involving the January 6 insurgence after it was revealed that his wife, who is a conservative activist, exchanged 29 text messages with Mark Meadows during the period when Donald Trump and his allies were promising to take the election results to the Supreme Court to overturn them.
Thomas texted Meadows on November 10 that he should help Trump stay president after the media pronounced Biden the winner.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., stated on Tuesday that he thinks Justice Thomas should recuse himself from every case involving the January 6 riots and added that ethics reforms are more than important.
Pelosi has expressed interest in convening a legislative hearing on adopting Supreme Court ethics legislation as soon as possible. H.R.1, the Democrats’ comprehensive voting reform bill, featured a code of ethics for the Supreme Court as well. Despite the fact that the bill died in the Senate, Pelosi expressed interest in resurrecting that section in light of Thomas’ texts.
