Biden Administration Sets Up Budget to Bolster Ports, Waterways

The ports and waterways funding comes from President Joe Biden's infrastructure plan, which was signed into law by Congress last year

The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it will invest $14 billion in programs to modernize the country’s ports and waterways in order to boost resilience to climate change, clean water supplies, and the American supply chain, Reuters reported.

The funding, which will be available in the fiscal year 2022, will support more than 500 projects in 52 states and territories, including the Everglades in Florida and the Port of Long Beach in California, according to the White House.

The ports and waterways funding comes from President Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan, which was signed into law by Congress last year with bipartisan backing and is one of the Democrats’ top domestic priorities.

The US Army Corps of Engineers is leading a $1.1 billion initiative to protect the Everglades in South Florida, which provides drinking water to more than 8 million people in the state, according to the administration.

The Corps will also spend $1.7 billion on 15 projects to decrease inland flood risk and $645 million on 15 projects to minimize coastal flood risk around the United States, as well as in coastal Louisiana, Norfolk, Virginia, and Stockton, California.

According to the government, 40% of the funds would go to climate and sustainable energy initiatives for impoverished communities.
