Fauci and Teachers Unions Not on Same Page for Reopening Schools

On Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci indicated support for reopening schools after the holiday break, contradicting the campaign by some teacher’s unions to keep schools closed, Fox News informed.

Despite the increased incidence of the omicron form, Fauci believes that reopening schools for in-person learning is the proper decision, given widespread immunizations among teachers and the harmful impacts of not attending in-person on pupils.

Fauci’s advice contrasts with that of certain teachers’ unions, who are urging schools to remain closed as COVID-19 cases rise due to the omicron version.

The Massachusetts American Federation of Teachers released a statement on Friday questioning the safety of in-person instruction in the schools.

The federation’s president, Beth Kontos, stated, “For the past two years, Massachusetts public school students and their families have been dealing with the fear and uncertainty of the COVID pandemic.

They have the right to know that they will be returning to safe classrooms after the holiday break.

We know they won’t, given the rising infection rate and virulent nature of the present COVID strain.”

If their demands for negative coronavirus testing for all kids returning to class after winter break — or a two-week return to remote learning — are not granted, Chicago Teachers Union members vowed to strike last week.

According to a Wednesday release from Jesse Sharkey, a CTU President, more than 90% of CTU members voted to support the participation in “a remote-work action” as soon as “the first week” following the winter break if the CPS does not request for a remote instruction after the winter holidays.

Teachers unions have become more politically engaged in recent years, donating almost 94 percent of their political contributions to Democrats, according to Open Secrets.
