Saudi Arabia reiterated calls to rid the Middle East of nuclear weapons, Saudi media reported.
The Saudi government has also confirmed that it attaches great importance to the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, Acting Media Minister Essam bin Saad bin Said noted after the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by King Salman.
The Cabinet of Ministers discussed regional and international events, including the struggle of the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia with the pro-Iranian Houthis.
Saudi Arabia’s statements to rid the Middle East of nuclear weapons are addressed to Israel, which has de facto nuclear weapons and Iran, which has not abandoned its nuclear program.
Meanwhile, Iran and Saudi Arabia negotiated an agreement to reopen consulates in both countries, Agence France-Presse reported, citing a diplomatic source.
“They have reached an agreement on the resumption of the work of the consulates. I think that in the coming weeks, an agreement may follow to normalize relations.” the source said.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzade said that at the moment five rounds of talks between Tehran and Riyadh have taken place: four were held in Baghdad, and one meeting was held during the UN General Assembly in New York.
According to him, the dialogue is focused on bilateral and regional issues, including the situation in the Arabian Gulf and Yemen.
On August 9, Khatibzadeh indicated that Saudi Arabia and Iran are on the way to resolve some of the contradictions between themselves.
On June 21, the new President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, at the first press conference after the elections, said that there were no obstacles to the dialogue between Tehran and Riyadh and the return of embassies.
