The Queen of England has said that the “eyes of the world” will be on the United Kingdom at the upcoming COP26 climate change summit.
In her speech marking the opening of the Scottish Parliament on Saturday, the Queen encouraged politicians to engage with younger generations and work to ensure a better future.
The COP26 is the next annual United Nations climate change conference, this time held in Glasgow. The conference is expected to be attended by more than 100 world leaders, including President Joe Biden. It starts at the end of this month, running from October 31 to November 12.
World leaders are under pressure to cut greenhouse gas emissions that are responsible for rising global temperatures and climate change. Major scientific reports recently warned of increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts and flooding.
The UN’s Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change had its first major review since 2013, and described the change in climate as a “code red for humanity.”
The Queen said that as the UK emerges from the “adverse and uncertain times” of the pandemic, this is an opportunity for “hope and optimism.”
The government confirmed earlier this year that the Queen will attend the climate conference.
