San Marino residents have voted to legalize abortion. In the small state, abortion has been illegal since 1865.
Seventy seven percent of voters supported the legalization of abortion. More than 40 percent of the population participated in the referendum vote.
The referendum will permit abortions up until 12 weeks of pregnancy. After that, abortions will only be permitted if there are fetal abnormalities or if the mother’s life is in danger.
San Marino was one of the last remaining places in Europe to have a complete ban on abortion. The procedure was punishable by three to six years in prison. Women were therefore forced to go to neighboring Italy, where abortion has been legal since 1978.
The country has a population of about 33,000, and has a Catholic majority.
Abortions still remain illegal in Malta, and the micro states of Andorra and Vatican City.
