Russian Ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, reacted to the newly extended sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline the State Department announced, claiming they violate the international law.
Antonov was quoted by the Russian media blaming Washington for striving to prevent the development of normal energy cooperation between Russia and Europe in an effort to gain a competitive advantage for its fuel and technology suppliers.
He also underscored that the US unilateral actions against Nord Stream 2 violate international law and contradict the principle of free market relations.
President Biden signed on Friday, as Russian and German leaders were meeting in Moscow ahead of the Nord Stream 2’s completion, executive order allowing sanctions on certain Russian energy export pipelines.
He argued in his letter to Congress that certain Russian energy pipeline projects will threaten the US national security, foreign policy, and economy by expanding Russian influence over EU energy resources and weakening
His executive order “blocks the property and interests in property of foreign persons” engaged in certain activities to facilitate construction of the Nord Stream 2, among others.
Yet, the sanctions will be largely symbolic considering the waiver reference notes they won’t not apply to the Nord Stream 2 corporation and its German chief executive Biden made the exemption for in May in an effort not to endanger the alliance with Berlin.
