President Donald Trump’s aides have managed to narrow down the search for the anonymous writer of the New York Times op-ed to a few people, according to a source close to the White House.
The source added that the President is still insistent that the person be found despite being counseled by White House chief of staff John Kelly to let the matter go in order to avoid leaving the impression that he is “obsessed” with it.
The piece, written by a senior administration official, alleges internal resistance to the President in his own administration. The source didn’t disclose the names of the individuals zeroed in on. The President, however, believes the person is someone from the national security sector of the government, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said.
The author of the piece points out that their resistance is very much different from that of the political left, as the resistance in the government wants “the administration to succeed.” However, the person stresses, “we believe our first duty is to this country, and the President continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.”
According to the author, that is the reason why a number of Trump appointees are making substantial efforts to preserve the country’s democratic institutions “while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.”
Trump’s “amorality” is the “root of the problem,” the author further adds, as well as his “reckless decisions” and “impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective” leadership style.
Over two dozen White House officials denied writing the op-ed, while White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a tweet that “the media’s wild obsession with the identity of the anonymous coward is recklessly tarnishing the reputation of thousands of great Americans who proudly serve our country and work for President Trump.”
Trump called the publication of the op-ed by the New York Times “treason,” and the person writing it “a disgrace.” He also called on his attorney general to investigate and discover the identity of the anonymous source for the op-ed.
“Yeah, I would say Jeff should be investigating who the author of this piece was because I really believe it’s national security,” Trump told reporters Friday aboard Air Force One.
