Prosecutors are working on criminal charges against the President’s former fixer and personal lawyer Michael Cohen, which are to be announced by the end of this month, sources with knowledge of the matter said.
Cohen has been under investigation for possible bank and tax fraud and campaign finance violations partially connected to a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels, intended to keep her quiet about an affair she allegedly had with President Donald Trump over a decade ago.
CNN also writes that investigators are further examining multi-million-dollar loans for the taxi companies belonging to Cohen’s family, again citing people familiar with the investigations. Investigators are trying to determine if Cohen offered a false representation of the value of his assets in order to obtain the loans from two financial institutions.
Cohen, who was a long-time confidant of President Trump, has lately broken allegiance to him and indicated he was willing to cooperate with investigators. For now, it remains unclear what information he has to offer or whether prosecutors are considering a deal for him.
Since the President’s former lawyer was referred to the Southern District of New York by special counsel Robert Mueller, he would have to cooperate with any investigation prosecutors ask him to, including the Russia investigation, if he wants to strike a deal with them.
According to a source, prosecutors have not yet decided when to announce charges against Cohen, but being mindful of the midterm November elections, they would likely do so either by the end of August or after the midterms.
The news has not yet been confirmed by either Cohen’s lawyer or the U.S. attorney’s office.
