The African Union was granted Thursday permanent membership to the G20 grouping of nations in a move that would give the continental body of 55 member states the same status as the EU.
The membership of AU, whose current designation in G20 is “invited international organization”, however, will be formalized when Brazil takes over the helm of the group from India next year.
According to Indian government sources, there was no opposition to the move from within the G20 which currently comprises 19 countries and the EU and represents around 85% of global GDP and over 75% of global trade.
The decision to make the AU a permanent member of the bloc is expected to be announced during the upcoming summit of G20 leaders over the weekend.
