The Financial Times reported on Sunday that Facebook owner Meta Inc is getting ready to say whether it would permit former US President Donald Trump to rejoin Facebook and Instagram, Reuters reported.

The market leader in social media earlier declared that it will decide by January 7 whether to permit the former president to return. However, that choice is now anticipated to be made public later this month, the newspaper reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

A working group has been formed by Meta to focus on the issue, according to sources familiar with its operations, the article stated, adding that the group comprises employees from the content policy team as well as the public policy and communications teams.

An inquiry for comment from Reuters did not receive a response right away from Meta.

The change follows Elon Musk, the company’s new owner, lifting a social media platform’s indefinite ban on Trump in November of last year after user voting.

Trump said that he had no desire to use Twitter again.

When questioned by a panel at the annual leadership gathering of the Republican Jewish Coalition whether he intended to return to Twitter, the former president had said via video, “I don’t see any reason for it.”

Trump started a quest to win the presidency again in 2024 in November, hoping to stave off possible Republican challengers. Since his defeat in the 2020 election, Trump has conducted constant attacks on the legitimacy of the American electoral process.
