GOP Congressman Calls for Probe in Biden Admin’s Request for Saudis to Postpone Oil Cut

The request to have hearings investigating the Biden administration’s request that Saudi Arabia postpone a reduction in oil production until after the November elections has been made by Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Republican from Wisconsin, Fox News informed.

The Saudi government stated that the U.S. had asked for the two million barrel per day oil production cut to be postponed by one month. This could result in a spike in gas prices in the weeks leading up to the November midterm elections.

The Saudis, who lead the OPEC+ oil conglomerate, said in a statement on Thursday that the government of the kingdom made clear through its ongoing consultation with the US administration that all economic analysis indicates that delaying the OPEC+ decision by a month, as has been suggested, would have had negative economic consequences.

Republican senators were understandably alarmed by the declaration, believing that the Biden administration was considering the political repercussions of making such a statement.

The Saudis were promptly rebuffed by the administration, which charged them with attempting to “spin and deflect” in an effort to support the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In a statement, White House spokesman John Kirby claimed that the Saudis had recently informed them, both privately and publicly, of their intention to restrict oil production, which they were aware would boost Russian income and lessen the impact of sanctions.

That’s the wrong way to go.

Since the summer’s peak, gas prices have decreased across much of the nation, and the GOP has criticized Biden’s policies and high spending as a cause of inflation and high fuel costs. As Republicans fight to take back control of Congress in the November midterm elections, the economy has become a key campaign theme.

Tiffany that hearings be held “to ascertain if such calls took occurred and what specific demands were made regarding Saudi or OPEC+ oil output by Biden administration officials.” She also encouraged Pelosi and the Democratic chairs of House committees to hold hearings.
