On Friday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the United States checked 2.45 million air travelers, the most significant day since February 2020, Reuters reports.
However, the amount was less than the 2.73 million viewers that watched on the same day in 2019. Despite the bad weather and personnel concerns that caused travel delays, traffic was still hefty. According to FlightAware, American airlines canceled 711 flights on Friday and delayed more than 6,000 others.
Due to record demand anticipated by airlines and the need to reestablish staff after the pandemic’s exodus of thousands of workers, American passengers are already in for a challenging summer.
“Get to the airport early, it’s busy,” a TSA official tweeted on Saturday, advising travelers to be ready.
The volume of traffic at the checkpoints on Friday was the biggest since the TSA screened roughly 2.51 million passengers on February 11, 2020.
Airlines for America (A4A), a trade association for the aviation sector, wrote the U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Friday that staffing issues were causing delays on flights even when the weather was favorable.
The Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic controller staffing strategy for the July 4 weekend and the summer travel season was the topic of a meeting that was requested “to explore how we can work together to better understand.”
According to the FAA, it “has addressed the concerns stated in the letter.”
In comparison to what they had anticipated at the beginning of 2022, airlines, according to A4A, “pulled down 15% of summer (June-August) flights.”
