The enormous migrant caravan, which expanded to well above 10,000 migrants as it headed off toward the United States border from southern Mexico, has reportedly disbanded after Mexican officials handed participants temporary permits — while organizers insist they will still proceed to the United States, Fox News informed.
According to Fox News, over 8,000 migrants in the caravan had gotten a migratory multiple form, according to organizer Luis Villagran (FMM). This travel visa enables people to travel freely in Mexico for a certain time.
Despite the caravan disbanding, Villagran informed Fox News that all of the migrants in the block are traveling to the United States to try to enter the country.
The caravan left Tapachula, Mexico early this week and encountered no opposition from Mexican authorities. The caravan also passed through a police checkpoint with the Mexican National Guard, immigration officers, and state police, according to organizers, but officials let the group pass “freely.”
The immigrants organized the caravan a week ago when Mexican officials in Tapachula refused to provide temporary passports.
They have now basically received what they wanted after a week and less than 25 miles of walking, with Mexico allowing them legal rights to travel to the US border without being illegally in Mexico. Migrants are not allowed to go beyond the Mexican state of Chiapas without documents under Mexican law. This was in response to the caravans of 2018-2019.
According to Villigran, as of yesterday evening, fewer than 3,000 migrants had boarded buses provided by the Mexican immigration office to transport them to the customs office. Over 9,000 have been issued as of now.
It’s one of several such caravans that have made its way toward the US border in recent years, including one in October of last year, but which are usually broken up by Mexican officials before they approach the border. However, just because the caravans have been dismantled does not imply that the migrants involved have stopped marching north.
