Tim Ryan Urges President Biden to Keep Tariffs for China in Place

Tim Ryan, a Democratic congressman from Ohio, is urging President Biden to leave China tariffs in place to defend American workers from unfair competition, Fox News informed.

Ryan urged Biden in a letter obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital on Thursday to keep tariffs against China in place, as required by Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, to show the willingness to prioritize the lives of American workers.

In an attempt to counter the record-high inflation in the United States, the Biden administration is considering lowering tariffs on Chinese goods, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo acknowledged the possibility on Sunday, saying Biden has personally requested her team to look into the matter.

The inflation in the US in March has reached a 40-year high, and it is anticipated to increase in the months ahead.

Tariff reductions, according to the congressman who is running for Ohio Senate against Trump’s JD Vance, would “deplete the US of leverage in the negotiations with China, overwhelm US companies with many imports they might not be able to withstand, and would largely reward China for failure to comply with the Phase One Agreement.”

Furthermore, Ryan claims that lowering tariffs will merely “embolden” China’s “already active Communist Party (CCP) to further harm US interests” and that it would be “naive” to ignore China’s recent negative action.

Ryan used the slaughter of Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province as an example, as well as China’s support for Russian President Vladimir Putin amid his terrible war in Ukraine.

Last year, the Biden administration argued that the inflation would be “transitory.” Last Monday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen conceded that her prediction had been incorrect.

In the battle to succeed retiring Senator Rob Portman, R-Ohio, China has also become a major campaign topic for Ryan and Vance.

Ryan highlights a five-year-old interview from Vance in which the then-venture capitalist tried to shift blame away from free trade agreements with countries like China for the loss of American manufacturing jobs in a new campaign ad, originally shared with Fox News Digital last week.
