Majority of Americans Believe Reducing Gun Violence Tops Gun Rights

The new legislation reducing gun violence should be prioritized over protecting gun rights in light of the particularly deadly string of mass shootings in the country, seven out of 10 Americans believe according to a new ABC/Ipsos poll.

Compared to March 2021 data, according to which 66% of the polled were in favor of enacting laws and 34% were for protecting gun ownership, the gap between these two priorities has slightly widened (net +9 points).

Divided along party lines, 75 percent of respondents who identify as Independents said lawmakers should prioritize laws focused on reducing gun violence and ninety percent of Democrats said the same thing.

According to the poll, gun rights should be a higher priority than reducing gun violence in the country for twenty-nine percent of those surveyed said along with 56 percent of Republican respondents who believe protecting the rights of gun owners should be a higher priority.

The new ABC News/Ipsos poll, conducted from June 3 to 4 among a total of 542 respondents, comes after the recent string of mass shootings in the past few weeks, with 10 killed at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY, four killed at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and 21 killed at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Another four people were killed, and 28 others were wounded in a string of mass shootings across the US on Saturday.

President Biden urged lawmakers on Friday to ban the sale of assault-style rifles in response to the recent wave of mass shootings and to address gun violence by passing laws to expand background checks and implement a national red flag law system.

Sen. Chris Murphy, talking to CNN “State of the Union” co-anchor Jake Tapper on Sunday, pointed out that any potential deal on legislation would not include a comprehensive background check or an assault weapons ban.

Murphy is helping lead bipartisan gun reform talks in the Senate.
