Summer Lee Wins Democratic Primary in Pennsylvania

Summer Lee, a progressive Democrat from Pennsylvania, has been proclaimed the winner of the Democratic primary for the 12th Congressional District, defeating state Rep. Steve Irwin, an establishment Democrat, Fox News informed.

Lee narrowly defeated Irwin, winning by 737 votes as of Friday night.

Lee, a Pennsylvania state representative, is now widely regarded as the front-runner in the 2017 general election for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.

She has previously supported far-left progressive policies like income redistribution, the abolition of the “carceral state,” and reparations.

In a tweet in 2020, Summer Lee said that they need the investments which they deserve such as redistribution of wealth, ending police violence, abolishing the carceral state, as well as committing to the creation of Black directed political power and reparations, instead of constantly thanking the black women, voters and organizers.

Lee also supports ideas like free public colleges, Medicare for All, and the elimination of monetary bail.

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., endorsed her during a campaign rally on May 12, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has also endorsed her.

In November’s general election, Lee will face Republican Mike Doyle.

Mr. Irwin described Ms. Lee as a “passionate, energetic voice and great leader for our region” in a statement released before the election, according to New York Times.

Even before the contest was called, the party’s left-wing leaders and groups were claiming victory, while those who are more moderate appeared devastated by the outcome, despite the fact that more centrist candidates had won previous races this week.

A super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee was one of the external groups that engaged in the election, funding a torrent of ads criticizing Ms. Lee.

Jerry Dickinson, an associate professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh, was among the candidates she defeated.
