A politician from NYC revealed that she will withhold the discretionary funds from a Jewish Museum, because the museum barred Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida from a public event, Fox News informed.
Inna Vernikov, a GOP Councilwoman, issued a statement on Sunday saying that she will withhold a donation of $5,000, she planned on giving to the Museum of Jewish Heritage, claiming that the museum has denied access to DeSantis to speak at an event.
In a letter, Vernikov argued that a museum of this kind should promote inclusion and tolerance, and by barring DeSantis from speaking at an event they proved just the opposite.
The councilwoman also said that this should be a strong message to the museum that they should not politicize, but instead teach about the Holocaust.
Dov Hikind, a former New York Assemblyman also blasted the decision of the museum.
Hikind said that it is a great shame that a Museum politicizes itself by prohibiting a governor like Ron DeSantis who is a great friend of Israel and the Jewish people to speak at the event, citing an op-ed from Wall Street Journal that claimed the museum has banned Ron DeSantis.
Hikind added that the museum’s decision is very divisive and greatly harms its reputation.
He also said that he will not visit the museum until this ban is lifted and advised everyone should do the same.
The New York Post stated that the money Councilwoman Vernikov, allotted for the museum is part of a $700,000 piece of funding that is intended for organizations in New York City for 2023.
The Museum of Jewish Heritage issued a statement claiming that the op-ed on WSJ contained inaccuracies and fictionalized quotes and disputed it, claiming that they have not banned anyone.
The Museum explained that the decision was far from a censorship issue or a free speech one, but that it was a logistical decision.
