Trudeau Reopens Canada’s Embassy During Unexpected Visit to Kyiv

Accompanied by the Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reopened Canada’s embassy in Kyiv during his surprise visit on Sunday.

Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine, Larisa Galadza, and her team will resume operations in Kyiv.

Raising the Canadian flag which had been brought down before Russia’s soldiers marched into the city, Trudeau has accused Russia’s President Vladimir Putin of being responsible for heinous war crimes and announced more military aid for Ukraine which will include funding for de-mining operations, satellite imagery, drone cameras, small arms, and ammo.

After walking the streets of Irpin, which was the scene of some of the heaviest devastation at the hands of the Russian army, Trudeau was shocked by the burned and completely destroyed homes of Irpin residents.

Irpin mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said that his city, situated near the capital Kyiv, has witnessed significant devastation after Russia launched its war on Ukraine on Feb. 24.

The Canadian Prime Minister met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, promising him Canada will support Ukraine as it seeks justice for its people that’s been killed and brutalized by Russia.

He also announced that Canada will be removing trade tariffs on all Ukrainian imports for the next year.

Trudeau’s visit to Kyiv coincided with the unannounced visit of US first lady Jill Biden, to Ukraine on Sunday to meet with Ukrainian first lady, Olena Zelenska.

She met with Zelenska, which had her first public appearance since Russia invaded Ukraine, at a school sheltering civilians including children displaced by the conflict.
