Florida House Adopts Legislation to Strip Disney’s Self Governing Status

On Thursday, the Florida House of Representatives approved a bill dissolving Walt Disney World’s special governing authority in the state, Fox News informed.

The action could have significant financial ramifications for Disney, whose theme parks have helped convert Orlando into one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and it further sours relations between the Republican-led government and a prominent political figure in the state.

The legislation will now go to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ desk, who has been at odds with the company since it openly denounced legislation, he signed prohibiting the teaching process on “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” to children that are in third grade or younger. The bill also prohibited teachings that are not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for the students in accordance with Florida standards.”

The Florida House approved the legislation the day after the Florida Senate passed it by a vote of 23-16 to end Disney’s special status granted by the state more than 50 years ago.

Gov. Claude Kirk signed the Reedy Creek Improvement Act into law in May 1967 in response to Disney lobbying efforts.

The entertainment conglomerate proposed constructing a recreation-oriented development on 25,000 acres of land in Central Florida’s Orange and Osceola counties, which included 38.5 square miles of mostly empty pasture and swampland.

Because Orange and Osceola counties lacked the necessary services and resources to complete the project, the state legislature collaborated with Disney to create the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special taxing district that gives Disney the same authority and responsibility as a county government.

Soon after DeSantis signed the parental rights bill, Disney issued a statement promising to fight the law in court.

DeSantis has spoken out against the firm on several occasions, vowing to resist the “wokeness” he claims the company promotes.

DeSantis said that the wokeness is going to make real damage in the US if it is not abated.
