The Mariupol mayor said that more than 10,000 civilians have now been killed by the Russian besiegement of the city and that the death toll could surpass 20,000. Weeks of attacks and besiegement has meant bodies are now “carpeted through the streets” across the Ukrainian port city.

Mayor Vadym Boychenko accused Russian forces of blocking humanitarian convoys for weeks. He said that they have blocked these convoys in order to conceal the atrocities from the rest of the world.

After Russian forces left Bucha, the world saw enormous devastation at the hands of Russia. Experts think that this has made them change tactics in other cities and instead block people from being able to see the real aftermath of their sieges and occupations of cities.

Mariupol was cut off by Russia almost as soon as the invasion began in late February. It has suffered some of the absolute most brutal attacks of the war so far in Ukraine. An estimated 120,000 civilians are in extreme need of food and water, as well as other basic necessities, such as heat, electricity, and communications.

Boychenko gave details about new allegations by Ukrainian officials. He said that Russian military forces have brought mobile cremation equipment into his city in order to dispose of the corpses. The mobile cremation trucks have pipes inside that immediately cremate bodies.

He said that forces have also taken bodies to a big shopping center that houses storage facilities and refrigerators. There have been multiple sources for the description of these corpse-burning machines.

Authorities in Ukraine have accused Russia of committing atrocities and even have said Russia is committing genocide. Some atrocities include a massacre in Bucha. This week in Bucha, the work of exhuming bodies from a mass grave resumed.

Ukrainian officials have also warned that Russia may soon use chemical weapons in Mariupol.
