Six people were murdered and ten others were injured in a shootout in downtown Sacramento early Sunday, according to authorities, The New York Times reported.
The incident occurred at 2 a.m. near the city’s Capitol Park, which is densely packed with restaurants and bars. The details surrounding the incident were unclear at the time.
At a media briefing on Sunday morning, Kathy Lester, the new chief of the Sacramento Police Department, said that when police arrived on the site, they found a big crowd and many victims who had been killed “in a really tragic situation.”
Chief Lester said the police were still looking for the gunman, however, it was unclear how many persons may have opened fire.
Officials did not provide any more information regarding the victims or their current status. On Sunday, officials had a heavy police presence in the neighborhood where the shooting took place.
