US, China to Hold High-Level Talks Amid Growing Tensions

US and China will meet for the first time at a high level since Russia's attack on Ukraine as Biden tries to get Beijing's help with the war.

The United States and China will meet for the first time at a high level since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, as the Biden administration tries to solicit Beijing’s help in resolving the problem, Bloomberg reports.

According to the White House, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will meet with China’s foreign minister, Communist Party Politburo member Yang Jiechi, in Rome on Monday.

President Joe Biden’s senior aides have been trying to press China to implement US and European and Asian partners’ sanctions on Russia’s economy. Officials in the United States have claimed they haven’t seen any indication that Beijing has tried to get around them so far, despite Sullivan’s warning China against it on Sunday.

The implications of Russia’s conflict against Ukraine on regional and international security will be discussed at Monday’s meeting, according to National Security Council spokeswoman Emily Horne, as Biden officials strive to maintain channels of communication open between the world’s two largest economies. The two sides will share perspectives on global and regional problems of mutual interest, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement, which did not specifically name Ukraine.

The US National Security Advisor will also talk with Luigi Mattiolo, Italy’s diplomatic assistant to Prime Minister Mario Draghi, on Monday to discuss managing the global response to the war, according to Horne.
