Marathon Pipe Line Inc. announced on Saturday that due to an oil spill, it had closed down a pipeline in Illinois that had leaked crude oil into a nearby canal.
According to parent firm Marathon Petroleum Corp., the leak into the Cahokia diversion channel was discovered the morning of Friday, and booms were deployed in an effort to control the oil spill.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency informed local television station KTVI that an estimated 165,000 gallons of water were spilled into the canal before it was contained.
The oil spill occurred near Edwardsville, a city with a population of around 26,000 people. According to Marathon, there are no water intakes or private wells in the local area. The rupture’s cause is being investigated.
“Resources deployed to the area for cleanup activities include boom, vacuum trucks, skimmers, and excavating equipment. Additional personnel and equipment are en route to the location to assist in cleanup activities,” Marathon stated, as quoted by Bloomberg.
