War on Cops on With Two Dead and 11 Policemen Wounded in 24 Hours

After the black balance of 11 shot and two more killed police officers on duty in 24 hours in four US states on Friday, the spokeswoman for the National Police Association Betsy Brantner Smith, stressed that this is what they call ‘war on cops’.

Smith, 29-year police veteran who trains officers, underlined that the police is constantly attacked and for doing the basic duties of their job such as 911 calls or traffic stop. The latest incidents happened in New Mexico, Maryland, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.

A Philadelphia SWAT officer was shot Friday evening while serving a drug warrant at an apartment building when the suspect allegedly shot the lead officer in his body armor after firing two shots through the wall.

A New Mexico State Police officer was shot and wounded Friday afternoon while pursuing a car that rammed into his police vehicle. Previously the same afternoon, a suspect, who was also shot during the incident, has shot and wounded two police officers in Frederick, Maryland, who responded to calls of a suspicious person.

The most serious incident during which 9 cops were wounded, including two who later died, happened in Phoenix, Arizona, during a morning shootout that broke when police officers responded to a domestic dispute call that included a woman being shot in her home.

According to the FBI’s law enforcement officers killed in action (LEOKA) data, more cops were killed in the line of duty in 2021 – a total of 73 officers- than any previous year since 1995 after reaching record highs beginning in 2020, when 46 police officers were intentionally killed, due to COVID pandemic.

That’s a nearly 59% increase compared to last year. According to Brantner Smith, although police officers are well aware of the risk that putting on a badge represents, the anti-police rhetoric that’s trending for over two years is definitely not helping the police.
