US Army Lands in Europe in a Move to De-escalate Ukraine Tension

With US Army troops landing in Europe, France’s head of state Emmanuel Macron continued his proactive diplomacy, holding talks on North Atlantic Treaty Organization unity, Bloomberg reports.

Any battle involving Russia and Ukraine, according to the Pentagon, would harm China’s global interests. NATO’s top official rebuffed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s demands that the military alliance ceases any territorial expansion eastward.

Moscow has rejected any preparations to attack Ukraine, despite reports from the United Kingdom and the United States that Russia has amassed around 130,000 troops along the border. Russia has slammed US army soldiers stationed near its borders.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who will join President Joe Biden for talks in Washington on Sunday, is under growing pressure to speak out against Russia’s military expansion outside Ukraine.

Last week, a German publication asked, “Where is Scholz?” about the chancellor’s involvement in the growing tension over Russia’s military presence on Ukraine’s border, revealing the degree of Scholz’s pressure.

Scholz has kept to talking lines so far, saying that all measures for punitive penalties against Russia are on the table, but that supplying arms to assist Ukraine to defend itself is off the table.

US military and intelligence assessments on the consequences of a prospective Russian attack of Ukraine, according to Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy, a deputy at the Russian Mission to the United Nations, are “madness and scaremongering.”

Polyanskiy reacted on Twitter to a tweet about an extensive Washington Post report citing recent estimates to US politicians and EU allies that a large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine might result in the deaths of up to 50,000 civilians and the displacement of up to 5 million people.

During a trip to Moscow on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron aims to clarify de-escalating the scenario in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia’s strategic objective, according to Macron, is to “clarify the terms of cohabitation with NATO and the EU.”
