Saudi Arabia, Iran to Hold Talks in Baghdad on Normalizing Relations

The fifth round of talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia will be held in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad to normalize bilateral relations, Iranian media reported, citing the Iranian ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjidi.

Masjidi noted that the meeting would take place “soon”. At the same time, he did not name the exact date of the negotiations and did not give any additional details.

Iran sent three diplomats representing the Iranian delegation to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to Saudi Arabia to resume their activities in Jeddah six years after the stalemate in diplomatic relations, ISNA reported.

Iran and Saudi Arabia recently held four rounds of Iraq-brokered talks to resolve the diplomatic stalemate between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran in early 2016 in protest of attacks on its diplomatic missions in Iran following Saudi Arabia’s execution of a Shiite cleric.
